I'm majoring in Computer Science and I was thinking about replacing my Alienware m14x.

Well personally I'd just get a basic, inexpensive Windows laptop and avoid gaming on-the-go but that's me; I can't justify spending an extra $2000 just for that and also don't want the extra weight. As for C++ you don't need anything more than a basic machine except perhaps a better resolution screen.
Stick with the Operating System that makes the most sense for you.

Personally, I'd get a really basic, light, inexpensive laptop to carry around and build a mini-ITX based desktop if you need the computing power for editing, gaming or whatever.

I already have a gaming desktop so this is pretty much just for gaming on the go and just working on C++ etc
