Really Stupid Question

Hi. This might be the dumbest question ever asked here. I'm trying to fix an old Powerbook G4 in which the HD died. Do I need to have a (dead or alive) hard drive installed in order for it to power up? Is it part of the power circuit? It's an A1107 1.67 17 incher.

It will power on and give you errors. You can boot off of a bootable flash drive.
