If your HD tuner has a FireWire (aka IEEE1394 or iLink) output, you can
record to your Windows XP box with Vividlogic's DTV Recorder software
(http://www.vividlogic.com/products/dtvr_overview.html) for $99.

If you have a suitable Macintosh running OSX versions 10.2 (Jaguar) or 10.3
(Panther), you can download the FireWire SDK from Apple -- it includes
software that allows your Mac to emulate a DVHS deck.

There are several discussions of HD recording at http://www.avsforum.com;
the above products are discussed there.

It depends on what you want to record. Many cable companies offer
HDTV boxes with firewire out or built in HDTV DVR. If you are lucky
enough to be in an area that offers a properly working Motorola or
Scientific Atlanta box, the cost is not much more than standard
definition. If you are stuck with DirecTV as I am, it is difficult to
beat $1000 by much. For recording OTA HDTV, a Mitsubishi or JVC DVHS
VCR can be used with a Samsung SIR-T165 or MIT MDR-200 STB. I
purchased an open box Mitsubishi and an SIR-T165 for $300 total and
can record OTA HDTV with that combo. It might be difficult to find
the pair for that price but you might if you are lucky.
