Recording karaoke song

I'm using audacity to record a karaoke song. I have it on the cardiod setting, have the gain turned way down and am sitting about 2 feet away from the Mic. When I sing the louder notes there's a lot of distortion. What can I adjust? Thanks.

What mic are you using? As quality has a big role to play, especially when being used for vocal reproduction. Also is the sound card on your PC a built in one, or a separate card inside the pc? Or are you using a USB audio interface?
