Red screen Hard Drive Recovery Process

When I opened Toshiba laptop, last night, my screen was black except for message "The Hard Drive Recivery Process" has been selected. How did this occur, what does it mean, and how can I repair?

I closed my laptop properly, went out for few hours, when I returned to red screen reading "the Hard Drive Recovery Process " has been selected. What do I do? Was someone attempting to utilize my laptop?
