I found my old laptop and its very slow when it comes to startup and opening applications but it works fine when the application opened. i decided to factory reset it because it has so many viruses (from porn obviously) but i cant because ill need some kind of cd which i dont have so instead i installed malware bytes to delete the viruses, after i deleted the viruses (3000+) the startup and opening an application seemed to fasten up a bit but all the games and application are now VERY slow, i played terraria on it back in the day and it was fast but now it became super slow, i downloaded minecraft to see if its just terraria whose slow, but noo i cant even play minecraft its super laggy its unplayable. What have i done? The laptop is a Dell Latitude D520

Solution

Nope. Depends on the laptop.

I just did a bit of reading though and it seems like Dell had some sort of licensing situation in that era whereby a genuine Dell reinstall disk would determine whether a Dell Laptop was genuine and had a license and if so, not ask for a product key. Getting that to work requires a Dell OEM disk, which you've obviously lost.

To be honest with you, XP stopped receiving even security updates three years ago. That PC is now 11 years old.
You **might** be able to perform a factory reset using Method 2 here...

That's like an 11 year old laptop, no? What are you running? Windows 7? Vista? XP?

Do you still have the COA sticker with the license key printed on it? With that you should be able to (legally) download the correct Windows version and perform a fresh install using the provided key.

A computer that old will never be responsive, but if you did have that many viruses the only real way back is a fresh install.

But otherwise, I just don't know how much help I can be for a computer that old. It's time to upgrade, IMHO.

Someone might come along with some better advice for you. But I'm out, I'm afraid. Good luck.
