I need to replace HP Envy M4 laptop system fan assembly 698079-001. The p/n from HP is a fan heat sink assembly that includes thermal paste. The fan alone is available for around $15 but the assembly seems to be around $75. Do I need the full assembly? or can I replace the fan. The HP service manual replaces the whole assembly, but at least one web post discussed replacing just the fan.
Thanks for any advice.

I don't know. I'd have to disassemble the whole laptop to find out. I want to have the replacement before tear down.

Is it easy to just remove the fan from the assembly?

I bought the whole assembly on e-bay, but I'd just as soon leave the existing cpu cooler pasted in place.
