replacement DVD on Vaio?

My DVD unit has died on my PCG-F590. I tried asking here and cleaning it
with Windex and a Q-Tip but nothing will get it to work or let it read a CD.
(The servo seems to have died and I am sure it is infernally difficult to
repair)

Does anyone know if there is any available upgrade for this unit I can find
anywhere? I would like a DVD/CD-RW or even another DVD-CD-ROM but wonder if
the unit in mine is proprietary in some way (like, most importantly, the
connectors at the back) or if I can use a DVD from any other unit or any
later Vaio?

Someone on line somewhere said that any Slimline unit will fit in. The one
in my notebook is definitely NOT designed to be taken out or replaced with a
floppy or battery etc.

Does anyone know if only a PCG-F590 DVD unit will fit in this notebook?

Laptop DVD drives are pretty standard items. Most laptop DVD, or CD
drives should work, but the catch is that the way the front plate
mounts is different for every drive manufacturer. Unless you buy one
made for that laptop, you will have to swap the plate from your old
drive onto the new one. One made by the same company as the original
drive will probably fit, but there's no guarantee. The same model
drive would be sure to fit. You might be able to see the model number
of the drive in the device manager. If not, you'll have to take the
drive out. Google for the drive's model number, and you should be
able to figure out who made it.

Does Sony use non-Sony drives?

I think Device Manager calls it a Toshiba SD-C2402 which sounds pretty
generic:

The combo drive looks a bit expensive for a computer I don't intend to use
for all that long. It is starting to slow down noticeably, which no amount
of defragging, scandisking, sfc /scannowing, Norton Win Doctoring, spybot or
adawareing can help: It just cant seem to release its memory when I close an
application down so I suppose I will dump this one soon. But not with a
bust DVD drive: The Toshiba LOOKS pretty generic: Can I assume that the
connectors are all the same on the back assuming I replace the faceplate
with the one I take off the present one?

Oh, yes, I am doing that already: But it is annoying when I take this laptop
out onto the road not having a CD/DVD drive

Yes, but that was why I was asking here:

Lots of ads there seeem to suggest that any slimline CD unit will fit in
this unit easily whereas the Toshiba (one which doesnt RW) is usually only
available at (slightly) highish retail prices from retailers. (My
definition of 'high' doesnt reflect the manufacturer's reluctance to supply
a part for a five year old computer except at a crazy price of two to three
times the value of the computer, it reflects the unit's age)

Unless they say, somewhat suspiciously, 'this unit is a working pull but is
untested and is being sold as-is'

(And I am still worrying about whether a drive some manufacturer like
Gateway ordered by the million for their computers will have the same
connectors as the same model Sony ordered: I cant see why it should, -
unless someone on these boards has done this replacement already)
