Solved! Replacing screen for Dell XPS

Hey fellows,

I've sent a friend of mine to buy me a Dell XPS 15 abroad, gave him all the specs and forgot to mention the FHD screen. What I got now is a XPS with i7 2630, 6gb ram, and a 540m graphics card, AND a VERY disappointing HD screen (1366*768). Contacted Dell and asked them if I could add extra cash and upgrade to the FHD and they completely refused.

My question is if there a possibility to change the screen by myself. Like buying a FHD screen in ebay and replace it by (I know I'll lose the warranty), but there is no point having such computer components if the screen can't provide it in games, movies, and even everyday work.

Someone ever did that? will the connector will be capable? is the dimensions of both screen are the same, etc...

Your help and experience will be much appreciated, thanks!

It's possible. But I wouldn't consider that type of upgrade till the MFGR warranty has expired.
In what way are you disappointed with the screen and how do you expect a replacement to be better?

If I recall correctly your budget did not have enough room for the higher resolution screen.

Yeah, you are right, will probably wait until the warranty expired, good to know it is possible.

But it sounded more like a matter of taste, so I didn't pay attention, and the moment I opened the laptop, all those guys wrote is true.

The angles are horrible, you need to adjust it in a very specific angle, and not to move at all.

Compared the colors with a fhd dell studio of another friend of mine, the difference is really huge.

The resolution is way too small for me to work, as I usually need to split the screen, and most of the time I'm not at home to connect a desktop screen.


P.S. the second request is not for me, and I explained everything about HD vs FHD for him, he is ok with it and don't want to spend another 150$, or reduce the configuration to get the FHD.

This is pretty much true of any TN LCD screen. (desktop or laptop).
You could get a replacement FHD screen and it won't be necessarily better.

You might be thinking of the difference between LCD technologies (TN vs IPS) - not HD/FHD which is just about how many pixels are on the screen.

It's the 1555 dell studio. He bought that 2 years ago for about the same amount as i bought mine, around 1000$, and it was the one with the enhanced graphics card, probably the 5470 not sure about that.

You mean he could get the IPS screen there and that's what confusing me?

Btw Dell's site shows pretty much of a difference between the 2:
(HD vs FHD)
Brightness: 220 vs 270.
Angle: Standard vs Wide.
Color Gamut: 60% vs 95%

Which is numbers for me and I have no idea what the real meanings are

Yeah, got to the conclusion when posted this thread, will be waiting 1 year till the warranty expires, and will be buying the FHD screen from ebay for 170$.
