Researchers Send Email Via Neutrinos

They used Neutrino particles to transmit an email (practically speaking), so what's the point in the final phrase?

It should have been: "..at least we know there an alternative for wave/light based communication"
 
You know how badass it would be to transmit with neutrinos?
Let's start with the basics:
Send an email to the other side of the world... thru the ground... in nanoseconds...
End of lag... forever...
End of cables as backbones, one ping from LA to NewYork, and it's measured in nanoseconds...
This whole "throttling" of your speed due to "congestion" would be a mute excuse.
Wireless that is impervious to walls.
Wireless access literally anywhere, in tunnels, in mountains, in the middle of the ocean, a mile under water....

The possibilities are frickin endless.

"due to congestion, we now have to enforce blackout time, you get 5 minutes every hour, but those 5 minutes you can download a wholde days worth of data on your old plan, if you dont want to deal with blackout time, sign up for out unlimited (lol, really its severely throttled) time plan, it only cost 80$ a month, and .005 cents a mb over the 20gb cap."

Uhh, it already is a mute excuse today without the neutrinos.
 
For those who say this is a waste of money, let's go back to history:

1. The phone, otherwise formerly known as "the talking wire", was considered by Western Union to be useless. They saw no need to replace the telegram.

2. A group of scientists were deprived of funding for their silicon transistors research because the management felt that they would never replace vacuum tubes. Intel was born when the scientists left the company and formed their own.

3. A newspaper claimed that TV will be gone because no one has the patience to stare at a wooden box for hours.
 
Indeed. Weakest link is still detection. I like how engadget postulated the possibility of cellphones dumping radio for neutrinos.. cramming a neutrino receiver and generator into a handheld device that has an acceptable pickup rate, 20 years down the road?

Neutrino's don't operate like RF... You can't 'broadcast' Neutrino's. You can beam them like a very tightly confined laser beam. It will never be possible to use neutrino's to communicate with a highly mobile device. It would be like trying to have a cellphone tower keep a laser focused on every individual using it.

However, since the main advantage of neutrinos is also it's main disadvantage, that they have no charge and can easily pass through solid matter, it's unlikely to be used in mass communications. It's very difficult to build a detector that can sense a particle that doesn't interact with anything. That's why they currently need billions of them just to see one.

As per the first comment yes, this isn't an alternative to email or text, what they sent was an email or text, it's an alternative to radio wave communication or hardwire/fiber optic based communication.

Second, the people talking about instant transmitting in nano seconds and the end of lag, etc. I'm not quite sure where you get that from, radio waves in theory travel faster than neutrinos do so you get some advantages that come with some disadvantages.

Third, as mentioned neutrinos wouldn't be used as an alternative to existing mobile technology, but what they might be used for is communicating between major fixed location data hubs that would then rebroadcast using other means. Perhaps of greater potential long term will be quantum communication devices.

Still very cool technology though.

Somehow reminds me of spammers (only here "spamming" the rock formation)... sending billions of emails to get 1 sale 🙂

That's a little different than...
4. The neutrino communications theory was shot down because it would require a 200 billion dollar piece of equipment at each station in order to make it work.

I guess that's why TVs aren't usually made out of wood any more.
 
A mute point occurs when someone is about to say something profound, but suddenly loses the ability to talk and is forced instead to use gestures.
