It's basically a Panasonic LX-900U with the AGC video level fixed and
Audiophile audio options inside a heavy chassis.

Right, so do you have the available hardware/tools to check it out for
functional/operational issues if I shipped one to you. I would
obviously pay you for your troubles. I've come to know from at least
reading a majority of the posts on this group that you are an expert at
laserdisc tuning at least for the Pioneer models. Not sure how much
experience you've had with the Runco. Just let me know. I would greatly
appreciate it.

I can work on these, so could Precision Laserdisc as they are basically
Panasonic LX-900U's but if the Runco special Audio board is bad I do not
have schematics for that. They are more trouble to work on than a straight
LX-900U as the extra chassis covers some of the adjustment holes on the
bottom of the unit.

Is Precision LaserDisc still in business? I believe their site lists that
they are no longer around.

Not that I know of but BDE in Europe still is that seemed to be connected
with Precision Laserdisc.

Just a follow-up. The Runco LJR-II is brilliant. Through my stepping
stone process of starting out on the lower-end domestic LD players and
working my way up, I've noticed progressive differences. I am the one
who won the above auction by the way.

With the NR off playing on a properly calibrated analog Direct View TV
(Laserdisc Video Essentials) using composite it's AMAZING. Especially
playing the masterfully transferred AnimEigo Urusei Yatsura LD box set
which IMHO is a better transfer than the DVD, considering the initial
DVD releases were cluttered with motion artificats.

It truly is a step up. I haven't seen ANY SMEARING on any of the LDs I
have. I haven't seen an S9 or X9, but since I already have a CLD-97 and
a LX900U, I took a chance on this auction just because of the price
point and usually people dont go for high priced/risk of damage in
transit items with low-feedback sellers. Especially ones with 0
feedback. Considering what I got it for, it's completeness, and the
rarity of finding one in superb cosmetic and functioning condition, I
think I got a sweet deal. The seller is a great guy with a fantastic
home theater setup from what I hear when I talked with him on the
phone.

Since I am not upgrading to an HDTV set for a long while, I wouldn't
need to get a HLD-X9 nor pay the price for one, but until I do, this is
the reference player for me.

The LJRII unit did correct the LX-900U AGC Video which is a good plus.
Still will have a little more noise in a deep blue sky scene than a Pioneer
unit but the LJRII has better Audio if it has the Audio R/L output board.
Since this is a Panasonic based unit it definitely does not have the white
smear. I'm not surprised you preferred it over the LX-900U as the AGC fix
improves the dynamics of the picture.

This is definitely a "do you like a properly adjusted CLD-97 or LJRII
better" and it is just personal preference as both are good units. I prefer
the 97 but that is just my opinion.

The LJR II is my reference player, after buying the complete B&W
M-802/HTM-1/SCM-8/ASW-2000 speaker system, I was offered one for $399, and
it blew my cld-99 to hell and ebay, but not back anywhere around here --:)*

Having collected laserdiscs from YEAR 1 [pioneer VP-1000] this is the finest
maching I've ever owned, though I do have every reason to believe that the
hld-x9/x0 may better it. With nearly 3000 laserdiscs still around, I'd love
to give them a side-by-side, but here [Boston] no hld-x-anything is to be
found, and $4000 from hong kong is ridiculous.

BTW, a couple years ago, I thought I had found one in Bulle Switzerland from
a guy name Gabriel at www.laserdique.ch. This man is a crook, and after
translating dozens of emails from the Swiss French in which we conducted our
transaction, Citibank twice ruled in my favor. He had first requested wire
transfer, but took the plastic when I insisted on protecting myself. DO NOT
CONDUCT BUSINESS with this person, unless you protect yourself well in
advance. I am fully fluent, and my preclusions of any possible language
related misunderstandings were confirmed by Citibank, as they translated
every piece of our written communication into English themselves. He's still
in business, so chances are he's dealing reputably with people in his
locality. He lied to me over and over again. [Çe message en traduction, et
tout courriel original disponible en français pour celui qui veut voir de
première main; I'm happy to provide this entire posting, and all the
original e-mails, in French, to anyone who wants to see it first-hand.]

I've seen LJR-II's fetch over $2000 on ebay in the past. Bear in mind that
this machine does not have digitial audio out, so you'll have to do
everything in audio outboard [that's my preference.] One of the
configurations has stereo analogue ouputs, but these are only good for
playback of analogue tracks on older discs, and for playing audio CD's
you'll always have to do that outboard as well--- i use Krell's HTS for all
these great things. I'm not going to sing praises about the CD transport on
the LJR-II; it really wasn't made for that. It's OK, your best bargain for a
superior audio CD transport can be found in one of the first generation sony
DVP-S7000 dvd players [it uses the same transport as the krell 28c, and
until pairing thelatter with krell's $8000 KCT pre-amp and a pair of $699
tansparent Cast cables, I had trouble discerning the difference] but let me
also mention that prior to that, I was using Krell's AV standard, a
masterpiece--- but with a cooling fan that turned dedicated listening to
drying your hair with a revlon on low cool. I've always found fan noise to
become transparent when watching films [just like projector noise in
commercial cinema,] but intolerable for music, unless you happen to be
drying your hair at the same time.

Anybody out there who would like to do a presto-change-o magical underpants
with me for an X9 or X0 you absolutley hate, look no further. I'll even
throw in my Smartchord AC-3 demodulator, vastly superior to any of the
japanese single-box units, this is piped with MIT CV 350 cabling and has an
outboard DC power supply; list $895, and when Goodwins had some available
for $495 they couldn't keep them in stock, and sold out advance order.

That's my plugggg nickel's worth---
enjoy --:)

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. Considering what I got it
for, I'm not complaining. The next and most likely step for me would
be the X9 and I do INTEND to buy it, just not at the moment. Though
with the way things are going with LDs and prices it may be a good time
to get one. I wonder if the X9 looks better on an Analog CRT set as
opposed to an HD set with Line Doubling? Has anyone done a comparison?

I was thinking about the idea of a site that illustrates the
differences in picture quality of the different high-end players with
actual screen-captures from various LD discs, though it would be quite
a task. I would have to formulate a baseline configuration, then vary
players, NR settings, connections, etc. Throwing in TV type (Analog vs.
HD) into the mix would make things interesting as well. There would be
the technical aspect of actually getting a screen capture from an LD
player to accurately represent what is actually seen in reality and
then displaying that accurately on a computer screen. That seems the
most difficult.

Though, I haven't seen anything out there on the web yet that actually
did this type of visual comparison. I'm sure the LD collector niche is
big enough for something like that to be of interest for those
collectors who want to see a good number of players in action. Maybe
it's something some of you more experienced members have thought about
before but never really wanted to do because you already know the
differences based on your personal player line-up. I'm sure it would be
a great help for the newcomters into the LD community or for those that
are collectors and want to step-up to the "big-boy" high end players.

I also loved the Runco LJR II that I had. I had the one with the
internal D/A convertor.
But, once I got my HLD X9 and could see the difference in quality, I
was no longer happy with the unit and sold it on ebay.
As Kurtis said, it all comes down to taste. The digital noise
reduction system on the X9 is fantastic and I find at the midpoint
standard setting, that it provides a less digitalized looking picture
than lower models with digital noise reduction, like the D704.
Also, the 3D adaptive comb filter really helps clean up the picture.
And, I do find the red laser makes a difference with super mild
speckling. Discs that show super-slight speckling on a D704, are speckle
free on my X9.
I really found the Runco couldn't compete. In all honesty, I actually
prefer the picture quality of the Elite 95, via composite output, when
compared to the Runco.
The Chroma delay issue doesn't seem to be noticeable when you bypass
the player's internal comb filter and rely on your monitor's filter.
But, as you indicated, as you travel up the player food chain, you can
see the gradations in picture quality.

Screen caps from laserdiscs are basically useless because when you pause
on a CLV format disc you are freezing on a half-resolution still field,
not a full video frame. You are literally seeing only half the picture
you would if the disc were at regular playback speed.

I can tell you I have never seen a HD set that displays LD pictures no
matter what line doubler as good and sharp as I got with my Pioneer SD-P401
analog RPTV. I was very sad when the SD-P401 died this January. Now I'm in
digital HD land and living with digital quirks.

I have found the 3D adaptive filter in the S9 and X9 better than any RPTV
internal filter. The best line doubler I've seen is the Faroudja LD-100 but
it was built before 16X9 screens and is not made for them.

In conclusion, HD sets Excel with HD signals and Analog NTSC with NTSC
signals.

The picture seems fine on my player. I see no cut off of the screen
when viewing. I have many players including a CLD-79, 97, and LX900U
and it's clearly a top of the line player by my comparisons. I'm glad
you chimed in with your positive input though.

The Runco LJR II was a overrated player anyway. It was the only LD player
THX certified, only because Pioneer and others never bothered to pay for
THX certification. Most of Pioneer's "Elite" models would have passed THX
easily.
I never see Krell, Mark Levison, or Theta getting THX badges on their
products....THX means squat, it's for newbies moving above the "budget"
components.
Anyhow if you did your LD player research the Runco LJR II was known to
cut-off the right most part of the picture. It's the "Jaguar" of LD
players.

I"ve had two Runco LJRII's and I never noticed this cutoff of the far
right image. If it WAS there, I bet it was a miniscule amount.
I actually tried to see it on the last one I had, doing an A/B
comparison between my Runco and Pioneer Elite 95.
It compared favorably. I found the colors on the Runco to be richer
than the 95, but I liked the clarity and slightly lower noise levels of
the 95 better, during the A/B comparison.

Yeah..I saw you won that MSB auction on audiogon. I was
like...DAMN!...I totally missed out on that. That was a sweet deal, so
I was wondering why all the fuss about the Runco when the MSB LS-2 is
basically a runco in disguise. ;-). The ultimate in deals would be
finding an X9 for under $1k, but one can only dream (yahoo auctions?)

The Runco I bought had only one owner and the previous he had it hooked
up to a huge Runco projector with a faroujda line quadroupler. This was
back in 95-96. Rarely used. It does fill a nice hole in my Salamader
rack.

Anyway, I think I'll be picking up either another 99 or a 97 since
I'll be moving to a bigger house and need some extra players for the
extra rooms.

Wanna sell me one? ;-)

Don't get me wrong the LJR II is a nice player, at $5K new it should be. I
beleive the right most part, as a earlier post stated, is a very small%
probably less than 2%.
You would not notice it on casual viewing and certainly not on any small
to medium set less than 56". Only on critical measurements.
But really, most LJR II owners would have had the player hooked up to a
front projector on a large screen. I take back the "Jag" comment I adlibed
that from a website. It's a fine "showcase" unit and you should be proud
to own it. Hell at 800 clams it's a no brainer!
