s9 screen lock

I upgraded from the s7. I had fingerprint scanning on it for various apps, but did not have set to unlock my phone. Now, if I want to use fingerprint or iris scanning, I have to use it to unlock my phone. I don't want my phone to be locked, but I want to use these features. On the s7, I had to enable the screen lock for fingerprint, but then I could turn it off and just use a swipe, while still using my fingerprint for certain apps, but the s9 deletes the stored fingerprint or iris scans if you switch to swipe. If I use my fingerprint or iris to unlock my phone, then I shouldn't need it again to use, say samsung pay because I have already scanned and proved it's me. Am I missing something???
