Hello!
I'm thinking about getting the Sager NP9170 laptop for the sole use of gaming.

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.40GHz)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M GPU with 4GB GDDR5 Video Memory
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 2 X 4GB
750GB 7200rpm SATA2 Hard Drive
and a 500GB 7200rpm SATA2 Secondary Hard Disk Drive

This build is just under $2000, and so is my budget.

What do you think about these specs? Will they get me through most games on Ultra with good (or great) frames? Also, I don't want to get the AMD Radeon HD 7970M as I heard bad things about it, so don't even. :na:
But I would like to know if the difference between the 670M and the 680M is worth the $500.

Thanks!

670M is an old Fermi Architecture.. and it would be better to get the 680M or if you want to save some money, you could wait for the 675MX, yes thats with an "MX".. it's a kepler architecture and almost the same performance as a 680M when OC'd

Since you're getting a Sager and that has a dual Hdd bay, might as well get an SSD for the Primary Drive and put in a HDD in the secondary bay...
8Gb of RAM is more than enough :)

I have the same, but with a GTX675M (basically a GTX580M) with 2GB and that same CPU and options, mate.

Is quite the beast, so I totally support you.

I put the first impressions and lil' review in the sticky if you want to go take a look.

Cheers!

I never really understood why the SSDs are so hyped. I really don't need to increase my boot time by 12 seconds, and I'll be playing video games, not dragging tons of files everywhere and things. Are there other reasons to get an SSD? (Because they're more expensive and I don't know if one will be worth it for me)

Gaming load times.

If you play MMORPGs or any game with level loading (like 100% of games, lol), you will notice a boost in speed and specially in a notebook, since you can't just put a raid 0 in it like in a desktop. Also, notebook wise, they use WAY lower power, so it improves battery life; don't know how much, but they do.

Cheers!

I heavily tested the loading on a desktop using a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe SSD (THG's Tier 1 list) and a Barracuda XT 2 TB (fastest 2TB drive)

Windows load times:

15.6 secs on the SSD
21.2 secs on the HD

MMO Load times:

45 secs on the SSD
45 secs on the HD

My conclusion was it was the server handshaking that determined the load time.

But on the Sager 9170, I went with the Seagate Momentus 750GB. It's a hybrid SSD / HD and the upgrade from the base price was $40. Now it's $100.

But .....Talk to Larry about the "Max Discount" and you should save $100 - $150

here's a promo code you can use if cost is over $1350 - "SAGER100OFFOVER1350" .... at $2000 should be bigger.

I have used SSD in my laptop and all i could say that it increases boot times, and certain apps that require loading will really speed up esp all the local apps, MMO i'm not so familiar, it boots up the same as a normal HDD since it relies on your internet connection.

Yeah, I dunno. The few extra seconds that I would save by getting an SSD doesn't seem worth it. Plus, the Sager will be on most of the time anyway (It will be a more stationary laptop)
