Samsung kies does not recognize my cell phone connection

I have a Samsung Ace Model # GT-S5830D cell phone. I have downloaded the correct, older (2.3) version of Samsung Kies. Kies asks me to connect a device and after doing so Kies does not recognize that I have done so and the little circular symbol just keeps rotating and says connecting to device. It never gets to the point of being connected. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Kies with no success. Any suggestions. By the way, I just switched from XP, where I had the same problem to Windows 7. Problem remains the same. Is there any other way to connect the cell phone without Kies for downloading photos, etc?

Usually for Samsung phones there is a USB driver that needs to be installed in addition to Kies. It can be found on their website.
