Samsung Tablet 10.1 freezing issues

Please help.... My Samsung tablet 10.1, freezes when the Samsung sign comes up, I do the ususal hold down the power button and volume button. It then takes me to a android man which says downloading do not turn off target????? This has been going on for days now. It turns off and have to keep repeating the process. Getting no where fast. Please help.

On the system recovery screen what are you seeing? Is it giving you options to choose from? Or just an icon? or something else.

Also, was the device "Hard Reset" or rooted?

Note: A hard reset (the power and volume down button option) needs the device to be turned off when you do it. If done when the device is actually still on, it would not work correctly.
