Sanyo 8100: Will Sprint's version work on Telecom?

I think I already know the answer to this question is, 'NO!,' but to be
certain:

The Sanyo 8100 CDMA phone is available from both Sprint and other cell phone
service providers such as Telecom-New Zealand. If you happen to have the
one from Sprint, is won't work in New Zealand, right? Unlike, say, GSM
phones, there's no such thing as an 'unlocked' Sanyo 8100, right?

You can sometimes social-engineer the lock code out of Sprint. CDMA phones can
be locked or unlocked just like GSM phones.

I don't know whether NZ uses the same frequencies that we do, though.

Ah, useful to know; thanks. I take it that unlocked CDMA phones don't show
up on eBay anywhere near as frequently as GSM phones because they don't
allow you to just swap in various SIMs for pre-paid plans depending on what
country you're in, and thereby completely bypass having to call up the
cariier and sweet talk them into activating your phone on their network?

Well...

Depends.

You won't find any unlocked Verizon or Alltel postpay phones on eBay, because
those carriers don't lock their postpay phones. I understand Verizon does
subsidy-lock their prepay phones, though, and yes, in such a case you'd have to
do the social engineering thing. Sprint locks their phones, as do the el-cheapo
$35/month flat-rate PCS carriers (Cricket, MetroPCS, Northcoast PCS).

I bought a locked Sprint phone off eBay for my wife, but since we're using it
on Sprint, it didn't matter that it was locked.

Also keep in mind that foreign carriers may have the restriction that some US
carriers do, where they won't activate a phone not originally provisioned for
use on their network.

The 8100 **would** work fine, you will not be able to connect to Telecoms
CDMA network though. Unless you know some on in high places
They will not activate a handset that was not sold by them.
You can roam here using your 8100.

I think that is the same with a lot of CDMA carriers, Telstra is Aussie is
like that.
Have a look on trademe.co.nz, I have seen a few good 8100 deals on there.

Yeah, kinda sad -- especially with prepaid plans, presumably most of the
money is going to be made off of the plans rather than the phone itself
anyway, so it seems a little greedy that the carriers want that small
additional profit from selling the phone itself.

Just remember that Sprint *will not* activate a non-Sprint phone...

Was the 8100 marketed by any other carriers?

No, Sanyo only sells US wireless phones through Sprint. They have an exclusive
deal...

Well, I think that in a sense you're right Steve, but to the casual
observer -- Telecom, one of the two wireless service providers in New
Zealand, will sell you a Sanyo 8100 here:

I say that I think you're correct 'in a sense' in that I believe I've read
that Telecom's CDMA rollout was done in partnership with Sprint USA.

....which is why I said "US".

Sanyo does not sell phones through any *American* carrier other than Sprint.
