Sd catd empty but out of space

I have a 32 gig sd card and when I was downloading a large file it said I didn't have enough space but I checked and it said I have 23 gigs left

Sounds like the file you were downloading was going to the "Internal" storage of the phone and not to the SD card. If that is the case you would need to change the settings in whatever app you are downloading the file through to save to the card.

Now if this is an app you are actually downloading, it may not allow you to save it to the card directly.
