Is there a test that will root out cards that might fail under use? Like a read/write data integrity test. What are the chances of catastrophic failure of SD cards and can this be proactively minimized?

SD cards do not have sophisticated controllers like SSD do so you can't monitor their health. They either work or they don't. You should never trust them to hold your only copy of important files. In fact you should never trust any single device to hold your only copy. Everything breaks or wears out.

Okay, but during the act of taking pictures, unless you are using a large dslr with dual cards, it is impossible to have a backup until after the shoot. Therefore it wouldn't it be of benefit to be able to torture test the card in advance, a read/write test of the whole card, as an indicator that it is less likely to fail under use?
