The Seagate portable drive worked fine with my new LG smart TV for 6 months then the TV started doing crazy stuff so I disconnected the portable drive and the TV won't recognise it now.
Not sure if I have lost all my movies, can't tell, any clues??.

Solution
Larger portable USB drives use the TV as their power supply. Since they draw a lot more than a USB stick you may have strained the 5v supplied by the USB port. As suggested you can check the drive content on a computer.
I have an older Transcend portable drive and some USB ports won't power it at all. In fact it came with a USB cable with a second USB plug so you can draw power from 2 USB ports.
If you can't get the TV USB port to work with another drive then you would need to get an external media player that would connect with HDMI to the TV.
