Separating audio and video via mobo and gpu.

I'd like to take the video from my Computer to the TV through the Nvidia GTX 660 Ti using HDMI, and then since I have the Onkyo HT-R391 which doesn't support 4k pass-through, I would like to instead send the computer audio through the motherboard HDMI to the receiver while still using the GPU HDMI for video to TV only. Is this possible?
Are there better ways I could do this without buying a new reciever?

The jump to 4k isn't that easy. I cannot find the specs of your receiver, but if it's older than a year, it likely doesn't support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, or HDMI 2.0a.

If you use a dedicated GPU, your integrated GPU is disabled, but I could be wrong. Let's hope I am.

in most cases onboard video would be disabled if you are using a slot video card, though on certain motherboards i recall being able to use both independently though this is more of a rarity if my memory serves.

if your gpu has multiple hdmi ports, or has a dvi-d port you can use one for video to the tv and one for audio to the receiver. the one would show up as a second monitor but essential displays nothing - its just for audio purposes.

if your tv supports hdmiARC and your receiver does as well, you could always route a single hdmi out to the tv and one from the tv to receiver and get things working that way as well.

optical might be an option as well, however optical 5.1 is all compressed while hdmi is uncompressed which makes it a less desireable option.

Yes I am speaking of movies. I know the receiver doesn't support 4k pass-through, just 1080p. I am confident I can view 4k content just fine going from GPU to TV, but I'm not sure how I can get the audio to the receiver and still keep the highest audio quality.

You won't be able to send protected video with your hardware, it's too old. Meaning no streaming services and no blu-ray. Your video card also has to support HDCP 2.2, as well as your display, and the receiver if you want that added in the mix. If the signal isn't HDCP 2.2 from start to finish, you won't get any picture.

Ok, so I tested some things go out on a friend's 1080p TV. I successfully got video to the TV from the GPU and audio to the receiver from the Mobo all through HDMI. From what I can tell, it works. It detects 1080p, the graphics card runs(verified usage with CPUID HW monitor). It runs a second screen that occasionally loses my stuff out there in the dark. But all seems to work with that.

I am still uncertain, however, if I will lose any qualities of 4k when I make the switch.
