should i buy 300$ headphones if i don't have an amp?

my main sources of music are my phone (htc one m8) and my pc, which has a pretty standard sound card (990xa-UD3 gygabite mobo). recently ive been looking into buying high end headphones, around the 300$ mark but it seems as if you need to have an amp to actually enjoy them to their fullest. since im not planning to buy an amp and i use my phone to listen to music, should i even bother? the headphones ive been looking into are senheiser HD600, but they might not suit me for outside use (since they're open back).

You can not use open back headphones in public. Everyone near you will hear it. You got to get closed. I chose open ones for at home, and I have another pair for in public. If you want a good all around headphone for home and public then get the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.

HD600s have a 300 ohm impedance, which is quite a bit. They wont be the easiest headphones to drive without distortion. I doubt your phone will be able to get them going very loud, the mobo might depending on the amp it is using. HD600s would be terrible for use outside or on the go, unless you dont mind everyone else near you hearing everything you hear, it also wont isolate you from outside noise at all.

You also want a decent DAC for a good pair of headphones. You can get a decent external DAC/AMP for around 75 dollars if you want, I linked one below. They also sell portable battery powered amp's to use with your phone as well.

Then don't buy 300 ohm headphones. I would look for something 50 ohm or less with good efficiency. However even then, my samsung galaxy s6 can barely power my 50 ohm sennhesier HD558s, I have to max out the volume slider before they are acceptably loud for me..
