Simple question about video bitrate when making a dvd

If my starting video is a ~3mbps MKV and I'm using it to make a dvd Is there any point in selecting a higher bit rate than the original file? Or will I get a better quality end result if I do?

You can't convert a file to higher quality than the original. The system can encode at higher bitrates or whatnot but that's just extrapolation; to get higher quality the computer would have to effectively produce data where none exists.

Sorry I'm not asking if I can get better quality than the original. I'm asking if choosing a higher bitrate than the original will will help to maintain quality. When I use an MKV to make a dvd the dvd authoring software lets me select the bitrate for the output which is always an Mpeg 2 (.vob) I believe. So basically is an mpeg2 @ 3.5Mbps or an Mpeg 2 @ 8Mbps going to look the same compared to the original MKV @ 3.5Mbps?

In part the bitrate will be determined by the length of the video. The longer the video the lower the bitrate you will need to use to make it fit on a standard DVD. If you have spare DVDs try burning one at a lower bitrate and one at a higher bitrate and see if you can tell a difference during playback. Do you have the option to use VBR (variable bitrate)? When you create the DVD do you use one pass or two?
