my Asus X553MA runs sims 3 with all its expansions put with immense lag, it is unplayable. is it the laptop or the game? should I be able to play it? or are the added expansions too much?

Solution
The laptop is too weak to play games. It is good enough to do typical schoolwork, surf the web and watch videos. It uses an Intel Bay-Trail generation Atom CPU that are also used in tablets and it fine for the basics, but not really good for games.

The following Asus laptop for $335 is much better for playing Sims 3 which has a Core i3-5020u and integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics core. Note, the benchmarks are based on laptops with the Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs which are a bit faster than the Core i3-5020u so the Asus will have a bit lower performance.

It is not a powerful laptop, but for the Sims 3 it will be fine. The below link has some game benchmarks which includes the newer Sims 4 where it performs "good enough" if your expectations are low. It's a newer game so it will have higher system requirements than the Sims 3. The Intel HD 5500 is decent enough to play non graphics demanding game with some tweaking.

Generally though, I recommend the following $500 Acer laptop with a Core i5-6200u and nVidia 940m if you intend on playing games. The nVidia 940m is mainstream graphics card, it's not considered a "gaming GPU", but it is a lot more powerful than the Intel HD 5500.
