Hi - I'm looking for opinions on which software package is the best for
creating photo slideshows on DVD or CD. I'm not too bothered about price,
but I would like to know which package stands out above the rest, and why.
What do the professionals use?
Many thanks.

MS-PowerPoint does a nice job.

You've said that you're "...not too bothered about price." If you really
mean that, then you might consider using Adobe Premiere Pro to produce your
slide shows. We had a garage built a couple of years ago and I documented
the entire project with my Canon PowerShot G2 digital still camera. After a
small bit of pre-processing in Photoshop, I imported these images into
Premiere and created a video timeline entirely from stills. Using Premiere,
it was possible to apply pans, zooms, dissolves, titles and other
'motion-like' special effects to the stills. You can then add an audio
track of narration and a second audio track of background music, all of
which is sync'd to the image transitions. I you want a DVD slide show that
has the 'feel' of movement, then Premiere can do a good job of that. If you
only want a simple, quick way to display your still images as a basic slide
show, then you can find lots of less expensive (and eaiser to use) products
on the Internet that will do that.

Forget PowerPoint and Premere (I have both of these, too).
They are powerful, but a pain in the neck to do anything noteworthy with.

Go to www.photodex.com and purchase Pro Show Gold.
Learn to use it's very straight-forward interface, and you will be blown
away with what quality shows you can create on DVD, as well as about a dozen
other output types.

Panning...zooming...motion effects...text effects...music...menus...
All done in real time.
Simply superb.

Pro Show Gold would be my recommendation for the reasons Mark mentions, too.
I especially like the ability to add multiple music files to the show, and
sync it so the music and slides end at the same time. The new version 2.5
also lets you add video clips. They offer a fully-functional trial download
so you can try before you buy. Though in answering the questioning about
what the professionals use, I couldn't say.

Or, try Microsoft Photo Story 3. Pans, zooms, music, narration, titles. All
for free from Microsoft. It is a good program to measure the value of others
by.

I vote Photo2DVD Studio for making DVD slideshow with music. Very easy
to use,and functional.
