Hello all, I have some spare computers around so I would like to mount one into my HIFI rack and play my music from the computer. I would like to keep it a headless unit so i don't need to touch it at all. this is the ideal scenario.

1. Keep my music locally on the hifi rack computer.

2. Control the music playback remotely with my android phone.

3. stream music (lan)from the hifi computer to other computers, win + linux + osx and android phone.

//EDIT I also need it to be able to organize by genre and grouping. super important because that is primarily how i lookup my music.

4. stream music from hifi home pc to mobile devices through internet.

I know this seems like a tall order but i would like this to be free and open source.

Ive gotten this to work in the past but I can't really remember how and the functionality was terrible since i had about 850GB of music at the time.

Thanks All! You Guys Rock!

JRiver Media Center and Media Monkey both have android apps for headless control,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=JRiver&hl=en

If you set up the computer with Vortexbox OS for playback then any MPD app will control it. This is a Linux based OS that does nothing but play music (and rip CDs). Many people feel that an OS without background services running all the time sounds better. It's free and easy to install. Give it a try.
