Those of you who spent big bucks to get the Japanese LD release of Song
of The South may want to seriously consider selling it to recoup the
investment. Disney is reportedly working on a DVD version for release
in 2006.

Do you have any corroborating evidence OTHER than the Jim Hill article?

I wonder if they 'improved' it like Lucas 'improved' Star Wars...

Sorry, J. That link just states that a DVD is in the works sometime in
the future (release year is not indicated). It lacks too many details
to be taken seriously. At least the Jim Hill article states the fall
of 2006 for the DVD to be released to mark the 60th anniversary of the
film. So far, it is only Jim Hill that is this specific regarding a
DVD release of the film.

I'll believe it when Disney makes a detailed press release saying it is
so.

Of course not.

Even if this were true, they would only release it in some
altered/censored form, as they have the majority of their classics that
are much less controversial.

As great as that might be, it's been reported before. I attended an
event almost 10 years ago hosted by Scott McAdams [I think that was
his name], titled Disney's Unseen Treasures. If memory serves, he was
in charge of restoration for the Walt Disney Company and he showed a
clip of a restored segment of Song of the South and then proceeded to
state that it was for a forthcoming video release - which never
materialized.

This is one of those things where I'll believe it when I see it, but
things for the head's up just the same.

If I had that laserdisc, I would not sell it until the DVD is ACTUALLY
released. :)

I saw it at The Digital Bits first, although it appears that they got
their information from Jim Hill Media as well.

I dindn't think $40 was too high.

If you found a copy for $40, then good work. The ones I've seen have
been well over $100.

I'll be hanging on to mine, no matter what.

I don't consider this stuff an "investment" anyway........at least not
financially.

heh, just imagine. one of the dvd chapters could be called 'Tar Baby'.
if they do release the dvd the bootlegers will still have a big selling
point such as 'UNEDITED TAR BABY VERSION'.

You jest, but Disney actually COULD use branching to give the viewer the
choice of "unedited" and "POMR*" versions of the film.

Not usually, but some releases can be an investment. For example, my
Genesis In Concert '76 disc which the band says they will never release on
VHS or DVD. The LD sells for $150 regularly.

It all depends on the disc.

I have a SVCD made from the LD. I've wondered what the LD sleeve's
looks like. I enjoy watching this 43 min film now and then. I has a
nice flow to it from start to fin. The only downside is it's to damn
short but I like it much more than the 73 Bataclan gig.

I didn't say there aren't valuable laserdiscs - I own a few rare ones
myself. My LD's are not financial investments in the sense that I did not
purchase them to monitor their value and sell at a point that provides a
return that's (hopefully) higher than what I paid. I collect because I love
movies and have a certain nostalgia for laserdisc. My DVD collection numbers
nearly 5,000 and it is seen the same way, minus the nostalgia factor.

Do you intend to sell the Genesis LD and recoup your "investment"? I
certainly wouldn't, especially if it's prospect of release is slim. If a DVD
eventually shows up, then your goal probably would be to unload it fast and
get what you can for it.

I'd like to get the 72 Belgium video. care to do a trade? I have a
bunch of Zappa, Pink Floyd, VCDs and a few others.
