oh boy whena re companies gonna learn , being first out the gate is NOT always a good thing , nor doesn it eequal instant hit.
one only needs to look at sega to see that story. they were first in the 128 bit era (dreamcast) and it was arguably their best peice of hardware ever released. it had huge sucess in it's first year ... but only in it's first year. DC's second year saw sales plummet, and it's third year saw Sega closing down their hardware manufacting altogether. that with them having 1. been first out with a next gen console (at that time) and one that was fairly powerful , the dc had twice the video ram and twice the sound ram that the PS 2 had , thus it had greater potential graphically than the ps2 (though not as much potential as the original xbox) . despite these huge bonuses and being out thier first , the DC was ultimately a flop in the end (on the financial side but that's more because sega dug them selves such a huge debt with the crappy saturn)
now as for teh xbox 360 being first out the door . this worked in MS's favor ONLY because they had saddled the xbox 360 with such powerful hardware (by 2005 standards), and their system was a LOT more coder friendly to dev's than the PS 3 was. it grabbed huge market penetration in the states and europe because the orginal xbox had gotten so popular in those areas by the end of it's life. had the 360 been a little less powerful it would have ultimately flopped, not suceeded. (some argue ahd it not been for the early overheating issues , it also would have flopped , but that so debateable really.
the point is , is that if the PS 4 is as hard or harder to code for like the PS 3 is , being early to market WONT save them nor win them the next gen. They need to go back to their basics, the origianl ps one was esy to code fore , and since sony had such a fuzzy name it took to fans quickly , today sony's name is not so fuzzy any more today , sony heaves their tawian made components at the Us and saves their really good japanese made hardware for the japanese markets , seriously look at any sony product made in american today and you wil see "made in tawian" on it , look at teh SAME product in japan and all it's components will have "made in japan" on them. sony built a good reputation in the states during the 80's and early 90's with thier japanese made stuff but in the late 90's (after the PS one) they switched export production to their recently bought tawian facility and now every sony prodcut sold in europe and the Us comes from there not their japanese facility which is higher quality.
the PS 4 has to several things to be truely relevant in the next generation
1. bring quality back ! , I mean they got to aim for ZERO fail rates almost impossible in today's tech world , but aim higher than you can achieve and you'll keep hitting higher consistantly eventually.
2. easy coding, the ps 2 was hard to code for, and the ps 3 was even worse , 3rd party dedication dropped on PS 3 for this reason as well as the fact that as a game software maker it doesn't pay any more to do exclusives, but it should be noted PS 3 misses some games becasue no one wanted to dual develope their game for it and every one else.
3. price is every thing ! the PS 3 released with a monsterous price tag of 600 bucks for a 80 gig HDD model and 500 bucks for the 20 gig model , and some stores pushed those priced up by hundred bucks (600-700) due to shortages. the next Play station, needs to come out at the same price as the next xbox , or cheaper than the next Xbox.
4. STICK WITH NVIDIA !!! , the one thing PS3 had going for it , was that it was the only console featuring an nvidia GPU , both MS and nintendo opted to go AMD /radeon last gen , and this next gen looks to be shaping up the same way. the point and pay off ... PhysX , only nvidia has support for physX and currently AMD has no comparible tech supported in their chips. is PS 4 keeps Nvidia on board , they can reap huge advances on the competition with this feature alone even after teh system has aged a little.
5. big things in small packages. lets not repeat PS3's down sizing the original large clunky PS 3 was hated and joked about a lot especially since it ran hot and actually looked like a cooking utility (namely it was often compared to a goerge forman grill). instead of sliming up later , think slim first !. sure cooling it is gonna be a pain but that's what engineers are good for.,Shit slap a heat pipe style heat sink over the entire mother board with 4 small low noise fans if that is what it takes , but the next PS4 definitely has to run cooler and be smaller than the xbox 720
6. run a closed internet system similar to MS's xbox live. ok granted not paying for psn is cool .. trying to get a lag free game on psn is hell! having to sign up an account with EVERY game company I buy a game from , also a big pain in the spot where the good lord split me.
inshort the PS 4 needs a far superior user exerience with it's online side of things.
7. last but not least DON NOT BUILD A SYSTEM DESIGNED TO KILL USED GAME SELLS !!! it will destroy you.
