Sony DAT TCD-D8 or D100, which should I get?

Hi,

any SONY portable DAT owners out there? I'm considering to buy D8 or
D100. As I see it, there are no significant difference between specs
on these models. Aside from the price (D100 is slightly expensive),
which model would you recommend?

Any input will be great,

Thanks!

Depends. Do you want a dat unit that sounds bad & is very unreliable, or one that sounds just
ok and is marginally reliable?

I don't know the D100, but the TCD-D8 has the same nightmarish issues as
the D7 and D3 did.... no balanced inputs, and that horrible half-sized
head assembly which makes even simple maintainance very difficult.

The one that's in the best condition.

Someone was offering (no price specified) a TASCAM DA-P1 battery
powered portable DAT here just a couple of days ago. It's far superior
to the Sony Walkman-sized DAT recorders in many respects, but it's
larger and it won't fit down your pants if you have to hide it to go
into a concert.

It's not really huge unless you can fit an Ampex 350 in it.

I _did_ see folks sneak an Ampex 350 into a Rolling Stones concert once,
but it was a long time ago....

They just carried it right in. The security guards were checking people
for cassette decks, but they just waved the machine right on by. I guess
if you're carrying something like that, you've got to be legitimate, right?

Don't get a portable DAT.

MiniDisc with 1GB media is about to be released in the next month or so.
Specs include 24 bit linear PCM recording.

Where did you see that, Geoff? I saw that and reported it
on alt.minidisc but everybody jumped on it to say there
isn't enough capacity for the stated 90 minutes. I couldn't
find the reference again.

FWIW, I'd be very surprised to see a front end on one of
those that deserves anything like 24 bits but I like surprises.

Try here.

Can't find the site that mentioned the 90 min 24-bit linear PCM, but is
possibly with on-the-fly lossless compression ....

But the question is "Is consumer-level MD reliabilty better that DAT
pro-level reliabilty". I suspect the answer is "Yes", and with WAV
recording incl 24/xxK/st this is likely to be the way to go.

I just had to pick up a used 'conventional MD for a transcription job, and
find the quality on that to surpass anything I ever recorded on my D7 or D8.
And better than most (all ?) mp3s I've ever heard.

I don't know. They're both pretty unreliable. I'd want to run a backup
with either one.

I'll say that pro-level DAT reliability is a whole hell of a lot better
than Sony DATWalkman reliability, though.

This is damning with faint praise, though, isn't it? Honestly, the D7 and
D8 were interesting gadgets when they were new, and they were certainly a
huge improvement over the cassette Professional Walkman, but they were never
exactly trustworthy.

I would concur except for one thing, the sleazy mini jacks that seem
to be universal on consumer Minidisk recorders. That's a real
reliability killer for remote work.

What do you think would be better and still work with the
form factor?

Nothing. A shirt-pocket-thin device is too small for any connector
that I'd trust. But if it was cigarette-pack thickness you could put a
mini XLR on there, or one of the Tuchel connectors that they use on
wireless mic body packs. (I worry about the tiny, flat multi-pin
connector on my VX Pocket PCMCIA card, too, every time I mate and
unmate it)

However, the people who want Minidisk devices mostly want players, and
they all want tiny. It's one more case (and I seem to find at least
one example of "I want" in this newegroup every day) of there not
being enough potential sales to make a product for a price that the
people who say they want it will pay.

Ya know, the male mini isn't intrinsically a bad connector.
It's the female that seems problematic. I wonder if a
better design of the female is possible. (pun noticed)
