With 3D you have to process two of the same image. which takes twice the processing power on the GPU. So your frame rates will be literally cut in half. Lowering the resolution solves the problem. 720P still looks good and provides a good balance. PC gamers would not stand for that and would add a 2nd GPU to remedy the problem. I think sony is doing the right thing.

this site is loaded with wishy washy , hypocritical pc gamers more and mroe theses days , it makes me ashamed to call myself a pc gamer. half the time i see many of you "pc gamers" cry taht graphics dont matter content is where it is at and consoles suck cos they just don't have that, the you turn around two days later and talk about how sh-ty the consoles are cos thjey can't pump the graphics a pc does , and ooohh yeah pc's are so awsome cos they ahve better graphics, oh and then ther are the ones that cry consoles are holdign graphics development behind, well i'm calling BSD , to all of you right now !!, if graphics really don't matter with you then why cry about the curent graphic stagnation , ?? atleast you havent had to do any major hardware updates in acouple of years. if it is really about the content and not the visuals , then why slag console gamers over the graphics of thier system ??? i'm just so titred of every other pc gamer at tom';s makign pc gamers all look like spoiled rich boys who cant make up thier mind on whats really important and what's trivial. you all make me sick.

graphics DONT matter , the current stagnation in graphics is the biggest boon to pc gaming in years, thanks to this stagnation the number of girl gamers and gamers that are not tech savy in the pc market has boomed. and so what if some one prefers a console , perhaps they arnt rich are you gonna hate them for that ? perhapsthey just like the controls better ,who really cares to each thier own, go aheadadn thumb me down now , and continue proving the point that most of you are total utter a-holes. in the mean time im gonna go play a game

[citation][nom]codewarriorfx[/nom]Im sure a reason of limiting 3D games to 720p, the nVidia RSX (PS3 gpu) is based of two GeForces 6800 Ultra in 2-way SLI with a total of 512MB DDR3 RAM. Can a GF 6800 Ultra SLI handle game resolutions 1920x1080 at 60fps and 3D vision?? I doubt it.[/citation]

The PS3's RSX Reality Synthesizer GPU is based on the GeForce 7800's architecture, not two GeForce 6800 Ultras. The RSX is twice as powerful a a GeForce 6800 Ultra. And the RSX can use up to 480 MB of the PS3's total memory.

I have a high end PC and an Xbox, 720p HDMI, no problem so far.. don't know what's the problem with people this days.. they are only machines!, not kids!

3D TV and 3D Glasses causing too much ~
and 720p just not enough for me
honestly the GT5 graphic dont even looks good for me

wow, I love PC gaming but I also love console gaming. pretty sad that people come in here bashing consoles like they have nothing to offer. Enjoy your VERY limited selection of games while the rest of us gamers enjoy all this goodness that is coming our way. 3D games + Move may end up being the coolest thing to happen to gaming in a while, enjoy missing out fanboys.

Also to those of you arguing you can tell the difference between 720 and 1080, I think they are talking about not telling the difference when running in 3D.

I'll still be impressed if we see 720p... His comment about 60fps concerns me... I hope he meant 60 fps per eye (in otherwords 120fps), if it's 30fps per eye you're looking and instant headAches and eyestrain.

I'd really like to see them pull it off, but right now they can barely get 720p working at 60fps constantly

[citation][nom]anony4893[/nom]How come so many people run 1920X1080 (16:9) on their PC rather than 1920X1200 (16:10)? In fact so many of the widescreen monitors I see lately are advertised as 1920X1080?? I would much rather keep the 1920X1200 I have on my monitor but is that resolution starting to fade away or what? Is all the (sort of) recent craze of 1080p HD TV resolutions to blame?[/citation]

It's cheaper to make 16:9 panels, you get more panels and less waste. Just happens to be a convenient marketing tool as well

[citation][nom]Trueno07[/nom]OH ok let me just get my HD Tv, my PS3, my 3d game, and my 3d glasses so I can play 2 games in 3d.Sounds reasonable.[/citation]
Yeah, I think Avatar the game about the movie not about an airbender is in 3D. Have fun with that.

[citation][nom]vartok[/nom]basicly, yes... the 1080p LCD are HDCP compliant and supports the playing of blu-ray movies... if you play a 1080p (and even 720) on a 16:10 screen, you get letterboxalso, to my knowledge, there are no 16:10 monitors that are HDCP[/citation]
Just wanted to let you know this is false.

Scaled down from 1080p to 720p? The PS3 already has trouble running games with intensive graphics at 720p (Most FPS on PS3 run at 1024x600). Since the hardware is already pushed to the limit at this resolution for some games, does it mean that in order to play in 3D, we're gonna have a drop in resolution or have lower fps? Call of Duty with 20fps or 850x480 resolution sounds so exciting.

I thought it was supposed to be able to do 1080p at 120 FPS...

The fact of the matter is that most games are not even rendered at 720p, let alone 1080p. They are scaled to fit that resolution.

I'm not surprised by this...
It's graphical GPU is showing it's age.
The CPU is probably still got some breathing room but the GPU isn't revolutionary and we currently have better GPU's available for the PC. Not a big deal though.. since Sony is the only one doing 3D and most people aren't going to go out and buy a new TV just for 3D. (unless you are rich)

[citation][nom]tothamax[/nom]The PS3's RSX Reality Synthesizer GPU is based on the GeForce 7800's architecture, not two GeForce 6800 Ultras. The RSX is twice as powerful a a GeForce 6800 Ultra. And the RSX can use up to 480 MB of the PS3's total memory.[/citation]

Well, about the two GF6800 Ultras I read that in 2006 when the PS3 is introduced. But if its true that RSX is based on the 7800 architecture, thats good. The GF 7000 series has much horsepower than 6000 series. I hope that the PS4 could use the GF104 (GeForce GTX 460) or newer Fermi gpus.

Man I never thought to ever compare a console to a PC. Obviously with the advancement of technology, a PC will be superior (Why do yo u think I have one?) but you should never compare a PC vs a console. It's like comparing laptops to Nintendo DS or a PSP. Consoles are compared to consoles, because thats the competition.

Anyhow, there are greats games that play at 1080p (FF13, Uncharted 2). People these days need to stop trolling forums so much :/ makes them look retarded.

Oh and btw, up'ing people that troll and downing people that post valid posts is quite absurd.
