sound bar and reciever together

my question is that why cant one connect the soundbar directly to the tv for sound and for video connect the reciever without any speakers to the tv via hdmi?

You probably can.

Go from your receiver to your TV for video.

Your TV then has audio out, just plug the sound bar into those.

You usually can.

Unless you need to use the receiver as an HDMI input selector because your TV doesn't have enough HDMI inputs there is no point in using it if the soundbar is doing your audio.
