Speakers make horrific noise

I have an RCA home entertainment dvd player with surround sound speakers. Randomly, the speakers make the sound of an air horn, and it's quite alarming! The only way to stop it is to turn off the dvd player. Are the speakers shot?

Not likely that the speakers are causing the noise but are reproducing a problem in the main unit.
