Split audio?

Hello,
I got my new computer about a week ago and it is lovely. My only problem, however is that my headset wont play other sounds when I am on Skype. Instead it goes out my speakers. I'd prefer to be able to hear both the person I am talking to and the game/video/music I am playing at the time through my headset. I have tried multiple solutions like trying to change my headset to the default device, but it wont change, it just stays as a communications device. I have tried disabling every thing from my headset to the built in audio to my speakers. What do I do to fix this?

How is your headset connected to your machine? By an audio jack or by USB?

By audio/microphone jack.

Then I'd consider using an audio jack splitter and have all your sound output to that jack socket. I.e. all sound will now come through speakers and headset.
