Sprint tells me they won't be able to unlock my phone until I pay them over a $1000 how can I get an unlock code without going

I need my phone unlocked so I can use it on metro but sprint tells me I owe them over a grand and I am definitely not paying that. How do I get a unlock code without using sprint ???
