Stereo speakers (2.0) and external subwoofer

So right now I'm running a stereo speaker system and a subwoofer (connected to the center/sub out) in 5.1 (turned off rear speakers). What kind of cable do I need to get to connect the subwoofer and stereo system to get real 2.1. Some games and movies with dts are missing sounds with my setup so I have to set stereo again but won't have any bass from the subwoofer.

Whether you are playing multi-channel source or stereo only, the sub should work all the time as part of bass management, where you told it to: Yes Sub, and Use it (enable). Try setting fronts to SMALL to see if it makes a difference.
