Stop McAfee pop ups

I have cox cable and have installed mcafee antivirus since its free with cox
What I really dont like is the popups that keep appearing to update the application because most of the time the updates requires rebooting my PC, there is no way to stop these popups in mcafee
Is there a free software I can install that will stop mcafee update popups?
I tried other free antivirus software but they really slow down my PC and browsing
