cant I just put my active SIM card in a used Verizon phone

It will depend. Verizon uses a CDMA network. However Straight Talk borrows networks from others. So, depending on which they are borrowing in that area, the SIM could be CDMA or GSM. If it is CDMA it should work, but if it is on a GSM network it won't. And there is no way to swap them.

You need to check with Straight Talk to find out which network your sim is for, CDMA or GSM.
