Hello Tomshardware,

I have a little problem with this Medion MD 96287...It makes a very weird clicking sound each time I try to turn it on! ( Laptop doesn't start up though )
it is NOT coming from the HDD so I assume something on the motherboard or CPU slot is wrong. When connected to a charger it makes louder ticking noises than without connected to a charger ( with and without battery in it )
Does anyone of you have an idea ? Also the laptop is pretty old.

regards!

Solution
There is a chip on the board, a power ic.
The ticking sound is it has failed.

It provides power and distributes it from the battery to the motherboard.
And when you plug it into the mains switches a circuit to charge the battery, while on mains power.
Basically a chip that switches the power state of the device.
If the laptop no longer charges the battery it has failed.
As much as the laptop never powering on.

The chips as I say controls power distribution from the battery, or the mains.
Once it goes it`s game over, unless you open it up.
Access the board, locate the chip and replace based on its model number and stated working voltages ect.
And a pig to de-solder ect.

Well, this has helped me more than enough.
I'm going to try what you have said and let's say after that it still doesn't work should I just throw the laptop away then?
