Most surround receivers require manual set up unless they come with a microphone. If the sub out is not turned on in the speaker set up menu you will get no sound. Sometimes even if you did set up the receiver it glitches back to the default setting.
Another possibility is that the amp in the sub is bad. Very common on subs. Bad cable will also do this.
