Subwoofer not working through optical cable computer -> receiver

I have my computer plugged into a receiver using the optical cable but it seems like the subwoofer isn't working.

Not even the Dolby files are using the subwoofer it's just imitating it with a low noise.

Is there a reason why this may be?

Check the receiver speaker set up menu. Usually all the speakers are set to small and the sub is set to on. That removes bass from the other channels (that can't handle it) and send it to the subwoofer (which can).
