The older (film) Nikons had a PCI socket into which the flash cord plugged in. The newer digital Nikons do not have this PCI socket.

I have two Sunpacks that I used on my film Nikons that won't work on my D70s because of the lack of the PCI socket.

The newer Nikons have through the lens metering dedicated flash units.
