Surround sound from PC to TV to Reciever

I own a brand new TV, brand new laptop and 13 years old surround reciever. Would it be possible for me to playback surround sound by connecting the laptop throug HDMI to the telly, then througput optical audio from telly to reciever? Is there any risk that my TV does not support audio througput like that? (the tv is a cheap model, but new. It does have optical output)
Computer: ASUS N56VM
TV: Samsung UE46f5005
Surround reciever: Something NAD from the year 2000.

Just plug your laptop into the TV then use the "audio out" cables from the TV to the receiver and turn the TV volume all the way down and use the receiver, that's I use my 25 year old receiver.
