There is no reason you have to use both voice coils of the dvc woofer. You can if it makes the impedance work out but there is no sonic advantage.
DVC woofers were designed so you could use a stereo amp and combine the left and right channels in the woofer. That was useful if you didn't have a mono woofer output and you had to use the full range preamp output.
