i have a compaq cq58 laptop with broken screen.
How do i switch straight away to external monitor so i can have access to bios options for boot order etc.

The manuals say f4 but that only works when its get to windows login , giving the impression that it a software option to switch from internal screen to external screen?

thx for all helps

Hi,

There's no way you'll be able to see BIOS with an external monitor unless you remove the ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. Once you've disconnect the ribbon cable connect your external monitor and it will act as the default display and you'll be able to see even in BIOS. :)

Hi, you don't have to remove the whole screen to use an external monitor. You need a USB keyboard, in the Power Options, Advanced settings, you change the action for the "Lid close action" to "Do nothing" and Apply after. When you boot the laptop, you close the lid right away and use the USB keyboard to go into the BIOS.

hi

i am guessing that power options are part of windows correct? i do not have the password for windows.

thx

mark

From what you wrote, you have a laptop who is not yours with a broken screen, because you don't know the password for windows. You want to change the order for booting the laptop in the BIOS, to install a new windows on the hard drive. This site will not help you for bypassing any password of any kind.

i have got the solution to install linux on this machine without being able to see what was happening , with the newer laptop having uefi boot its a lot more straight forwards to install linux now , just popped the dvd in with linux distro on in my case it was linux mint 17.3 64bit and wait for about 40 seconds then press enter after about 1 or so it appears with linux mint logo and then it just the normal process of install linux to the internal hard that has had its partiton deleted and away with annoying windows 8.1 and welcome to world of linux.

i only wanted to know if the solution to my bios and screen problems cud have be solved inside windows but i do not use it at all now , only when i am trying to fix friends n family laptops. i am in the process of trying to convert them over to linux buts it very hard up hill battle.

thx every1 here
enjoy windows
