Hello,

I help run a very small computer repair shop. One of the things we run into consistently is the need for data backup and/or OS install. Data backups always seem to cause issues, particularly the reconfiguration of the user profile settings in WIndows and various programs. So we are hoping to find a software solution to help.

We are hoping to find a software package that can help automate the process of backing up user files, software activation keys and user profile settings. We would also like the software to assist in transferring the recovered information to a fresh install of Windows or a new computer. We are looking for something that can help remove the headaches and man hours involved in this sort of project.

Basically we would like to be able to hand the customer's computer back to them after an OS install and have it 100% exactly the way they gave it to us (without the problems that needed to be fixed, of course), and we want a software package that will assist us in meeting that goal with minimal effort.

Does anyone have any ideas for this? Thanks!

Solution
You won't find a one-click solution for that. Installed programs don't keep licence and configuration information at single place. It is spread among registry, AppData, ProgramData, User Profile FOlder.

You will still need set-up media for them, and in many cases you have to de-register the software first in order to be able to re-activate it later on. Last but not least - you don't know whether the installed software was legally obtained. Once you reinstall it for the customer (and clicking on many "Agree"s), it will be you who's on the hook, not the customer.
