i have an A31 thinkpad that suddenly began to shut down whenever an adapter is plugged in..even if the adapter isnt plugged into power ..it still shuts down as soon as the plug makes contact...seems like something must shorting out ..would a virus do this?..

That's certainly odd. The fact that the machine shuts down instantly indicates you have a hardware problem - so no viruses here.

Have you dropped/damaged the notebook lately?

Make sure that the ports for the power on the notebook and its power supply are free and clean.

If it does not shutdown with only battery then definetly there is short. Short could be either at the adapter or at the connector on the laptop. Most likely the connector on the laptop.

If you are handy with a solder i know dc jacks are about $5 on ebay. i think it would be worth it to try for five bucks.
