A device very similar to this was in a science fiction story I once read, except the brand was Swiss (as in Swiss Army Knives), not... Um... eRoll or whatever.

eRoll? Who named this.. a bunch of kandy-kids? All this makes me think of is a bunch of e-tards at a rave asking for rollz and molly

iPad killer! 😛

Also, 10 years after the first release of one of these Jobs will release a product called "iPaper" and call it "revolutionary" even though it's 10 years later from when the first consumer versions of the product were released.

I had this idea when they first started talking about 'flexible' OLED screens a couple years ago. My idea was a bit different, though, with the screen folded, accordion-style, into a media player, so you could flip out a bigger screen to watch movies on.

This kind of reminds me of the tablet-type device they had in the old TV series Earth: Final Conflict

[citation][nom]Kryan[/nom]smaller than that? my umbrella is bigger than that!!! we're still at the beginning of the 21st century, Rico. Enough Minority Report for you!as for the gadget idea, I think it's great![/citation]
Good movie reference. haha

[citation][nom]gpace[/nom]Too flimsy, I'd personally like something that also stiffens when rolled out.[/citation]

That's what she said...

The good thing is the technology actually exists. There is a video of a thin paper like video playing being beaten with a hammer vs your standard media player. I can't wait to see the end results.

I can totally see a device like that coming; I'm actually half-expecting one :)

Size and form-factor considerations aside, the screen CAN be stiffened quite easily. have you ever used a tape-measurer? They actually perform the same function, namely they stiffen when unrolled. You can add two strips along the rims of the scrolled display and they would also prevent the wear and tear of the unprotected edges. That way you could easily hold the device with one hand while operating with the other.

I bet we are going to see some such form of foldable tech within 3 - 4 years.

Now what would be really cool would be for the display area to resize its resolution dynamically according to how much you unscroll. 😉
And the cylindrical unit needs to be slightly flattened on the left side, so you can set it on a surface and read / watch it. like a regular screen. Yupp, definitely useful.

[citation][nom]jossrik[/nom]I thought cell phones were the most portable computers... Least the "smart" ones...[/citation]

Exactly, I consider my moto droid to be "the most portable computer", it does everything my netbook can do (with the exception of silverlight, and flash until froyo is released).
