I had this idea when they first started talking about 'flexible' OLED screens a couple years ago. My idea was a bit different, though, with the screen folded, accordion-style, into a media player, so you could flip out a bigger screen to watch movies on.

This kind of reminds me of the tablet-type device they had in the old TV series Earth: Final Conflict

The good thing is the technology actually exists. There is a video of a thin paper like video playing being beaten with a hammer vs your standard media player. I can't wait to see the end results.

Size and form-factor considerations aside, the screen CAN be stiffened quite easily. have you ever used a tape-measurer? They actually perform the same function, namely they stiffen when unrolled. You can add two strips along the rims of the scrolled display and they would also prevent the wear and tear of the unprotected edges. That way you could easily hold the device with one hand while operating with the other.

I bet we are going to see some such form of foldable tech within 3 - 4 years.

Now what would be really cool would be for the display area to resize its resolution dynamically according to how much you unscroll. 😉
And the cylindrical unit needs to be slightly flattened on the left side, so you can set it on a surface and read / watch it. like a regular screen. Yupp, definitely useful.

Exactly, I consider my moto droid to be "the most portable computer", it does everything my netbook can do (with the exception of silverlight, and flash until froyo is released).
