[citation][nom]Shez[/nom]I'm with kayvonjoon. Sure having a warning is nice, but wouldn't it make more sense to build a machine that can handle the temps it produces. Assuming that the picture above wasn't staged (which, it might have been), that scenario looks like a typical setup for a console ventilation-wise.Oh and does anyone else find humor that instead of RRoDs ppl will now have RDoDs? Atleast M$ could have made their fatal errors have dissimilar acronyms.[/citation]

You're retarded:

1. That's not a setup anyone should have, keeping their console running 24x7 inside an acrylic case with only a few air holes. That's stupid and is asking for hardware problems

2. Your PC can overheat if it doesn't get the proper ventilation. Doesn't mean that it's HP or Dell's fault for building a computer that COULD overheat if not given proper ventilation.

3. I'd rather take a message that prevents overheating and shuts off my console than it dying and then being without a console for a few weeks.

EDIT: Realized it's not in an acrylic box, my apologies. The picture looked like that at first. I rescind that comment. The other two comments still stand.

With the thread in question finally loading, and apparently little talk from the person who posted the pic, other comments seem to state, with reasonable evidence, that he had the system upright against the right wall of the case thereby blocking the air vents.

There is dust on the right of the XBox that indicates that he probably had it upright, blocking ventilation, experienced the RDOD, laid it flat, and then took a picture of it.

[citation][nom]sceen311[/nom]I have a very simple rule when it comes to Microsoft products...Wait 3-5 years after release to purchase, because that's how long it takes them to make the product worth buying.[/citation]

LOL.... so wait until the product is discontinued before buying?

The MS Sidewinders were the BEST PC joysticks ever made, I still have mine. They make some pretty good mice, but still prefer Logitech.

Sounds like too little, too late for many 360 owners. If they had addressed this issue a couple years ago (instead of ignoring, denying, and sweeping under the rug) like a responsible company would, just think how many owners would have been saved a great deal of disappointment and heartache.
And considering the feature, regardless of different chips it looks like they are still having overheating issues.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the newer xbox either. In fact I would be very hesitant to buy any console from micro$oft.

I graduated from XBOX360 about 3 years ago...sent it off for warranty and it came back and worked one time before 3 RINGS again. It always had plenty of venting...even had an additional vent fan on it because the darn thing was always so hot even after mild play.

Nice to see MS fix at the problem but it would be even better if they actually addressed the over heat problems and I'm sure they did...they don't want to process warranty claims anymore than people want to go through the hassle of sending it off.

There is no excuse for a device to overheat in an air conditioned room, most red ring of deaths I hear about are from people who read about it in advance had 1 foot minimum clearance all around.

I had a laptop manufacturer give me 3 whole laptops in parts trying to solve a simple poor thermal design, which I will test for and cancel payment for next time, I refuse to waste days/months solving a problem that should have been easily identified and fixed in development.

[citation][nom]warmon6[/nom]Well which would you have? replacing and xbox 360 every time it died due to heat or the xbox protecting its self before it gets damaged. I think i would take option B. Now this is something that they should of done while back in my personal option but guess it's better late than than.[/citation]

Ill take option c. The option that when released didnt stand out like a sore gaudy thumb in my entertainment center, the option that didnt over heat, the option that would give me a 10 year life cycle, and option that allowed me to play online for no extra cost. Man I could keep going and going but option c wasnt perfect either. Thats why im changing my answer to d. Was always a console gamer but the controling nature and poor overall hardware choices are pushing me into the PC for my gaming needs. Not to mention the console manufacturers inability to listen to the consumer.

[citation][nom]warmon6[/nom]Heck, it only takes my computer to just from 40c to 60c in just a minute or 2 and in about 7 mins hits it max temp of 72c. Well a game isn't always keeping the cpu at its max temp.[/citation]

Well, I dont have a heXBOX, but I do alot with my computer, and i can tell you your cooling is $h1t if it overhaets in 7 minutes of running Prime.....GEEZZZ!!

Probably using the Intel stock cooler.

[citation][nom]carlhenry[/nom]did somebody try to overheat jasper? i think the S model has a 45nm process and is a lot better than jasper's 65nm process build. plus, it's already said that the S has a proper placement of things that are prone to give you this kind of sh@$ compared to the older models. now if someone forces to overheat jasper just like what they did to S, think again Gamer-"girl".[/citation]

Are you questioning my being a girl- you've never seen girls play a game or something? or you don't think girls know about technical stuff? so much sexism

[citation][nom]1pp1k10k4m1[/nom]Apparently Gamer-girl expects her money to buy her a working console. My PS3 in a very similar situation to the pictures has not once even hinted at overheating. My 360...well, its given me more than one scare, and they are infamous for overheating. When I give a company money for something I expect their product to work, and work as advertised. I've never seen an xbox commercial or advert that showed people getting cut out of their game for red-ringing, or red-dotting. Have you?[/citation]

My point exactly, i would have gotten a PS3 if they had the games i wanted to play.

[citation][nom]1pp1k10k4m1[/nom]Why not fix the root of the problem?!![/citation]

Agreed

I'm not saying that PS3 is better than xbox or visa-versa, just that Microsoft is replacing one problem with another.

You know how doctors treat the symptoms and not the cause....

Have the falcon 360 and put a ton of hours on it, haven't had one issue to date. On for long periods of time and it plays perfect every time. Best bang for the buck of any system Iv ever had.

Same here.

Did Microsoft address the root of the problem? Yes they did, several years ago! The problem is that because the failure rate was so high, now that failure rates have dropped down to normal levels, any one instance out of hundreds where someone's console fails likely due to user error, such as in this case, people will automatically blame Microsoft. It's expected, it's basic psychology. However, that doesn't mean that it's correct. It's got about as much basis in reality as the Patriot Act did.

[citation][nom]jchoefer[/nom]I don't own an Xbox, but I would think that any serious gamer would consider adding a fan to improve ventilation if they were concerned about overheating. In general, heat shortens lifespans for electronics. I can't see a thermal shutdown (even once in a while) being good for components. From the picture above, a 120mm fan taped to the vents ought to do it. Personally I'd use gaffers tape since it's black and can be removed without leaving residue. Thermaltake even makes a 120mm fan with a USB connection for power![/citation]
Good point but that's why they set it to shutdown right before it's threshold sso it should never damage any components.Same as us setting thermo warnings or pc shutdown in our bios.I've personally never had any overheating problems with the original Xbox360 but I think this is great to help prevent any misfortunes.I also hope on top of that with the redesign they did soemthing that helps lowers the thermal to to help this be an almost nonexististant problem.I know the video cards in both the orignal 360 and the ps3 had heat issues it's a given nowadays, but I'm sure poeple have a tendancy to place the consoles so that they don't get adequete ventilation as well.

^^^ +1000
Basically this is the 4th revision of the Xbox 360, each revision has reduced the power consumption/heat output.

By the time we got to the 3rd revision (Jasper) the Xbox was basically error free unless some idiot wrapped it in a towel and put it next to an open fire.

Yet people say "Same old Xbox" as they haven't got a clue what they are talking about. Microsoft could easily have called each new revision a new name like the Xbox 3, 4 & 5. Perhaps they didn't as the software and interface are the same, as are the game disks.

But in actual hardware terms, which is the crux of the overheating issues, the current Xbox 360S (or Slim) is a completely differant console to the one that had all the RROD woes of the past.

Want a pointless car analogy? OK, you asked for it.

I have an old VW Beetle from the 1960's that is a rusty old POS, it's engine is crap, it's interior is crap, the steering, brakes, gears and the styling is all crapola on a stick. So therefore I am not interested in the brand new VW Beetle, it's got the same name so it must be the same right?
WRONG!!!!!!!

bad analogy

those cars look completly different for a start and everyone nows the new 360 is same as old

it may be cooler/use less power
but it is the same console just an enhanced version of it

and the anoyance people had wasnt the rrod it was that it wouldnt warn you when it got too how, which has been in pc's for a long time
