Why is i-7 with 2.3ghz more expensive than 1-5 with 2.5ghz?

[Also people are telling me this cpu is better than getting AMD quad core around 2.8ghz+ why?]

What does the i7 - [ 3610 QM ] <- this numbers mean?

I am a complete "noob" when it comes to computers.
I would love to hear why my thought on higher the ghz the better the processor isnt working in this situation

What is the purpose of your laptop? Then we can actually help you out.

BTW a core i7 is more expensive because it has hyper threading, so it has 4 physical CPU's on 1 die, and 4 extra threads that look like 4 more CPU's but is really just hyperthreading. The core i5 does not have hyperthreading, and is only a quad core.

If I were you I would drop down to a I5 if your mainly gaming, and possibly getting a higher up GPU, like the GTX 675.

Architecture architecture architecture. The newest Intel CPUs are much stronger than AMD at the same core count and speed (GHz).

The Q in the i7 you listed means it's a quad-core. The mobile i5's are all dual-cores. Both types use Hyperthreading.

*Edit - also, the performance increase from the 2.3GHz i7 to the 2.6GHz i7 is IN NO WAY worth $170. Maybe $40. The important difference is between two or four cores. Get the i7-3610QM and save your money.

Hi!

First I'll answer the first question

The i7 is a quad core cpu with hyper threading meaning that it has basically 4 'cores' but windows will see it as having 8. The i5 is a dual core so it has two but windows sees it as 4. So because the i7 has four cores even at a lower clockspeed (ghz) the i7 is faster

The i7 is better than the AMD quad core because of the way the core is designed or the 'architecture' of it. This means at 2.8ghz the AMD cpu is still not as fast as an Intel i7 at 2.3ghz

The 3610 refers to the model number of the i7.

The '3' is the generation (Ivy Bridge 22nm)
The '6' '1' and '0' are the performance level compared to other intel cpus of the same generation. The higher the last three numbers the better
The 'Q' means it is quad core
and finally the 'm' means it is a mobile chip.

As for the GT650m if you can I would keep the stock 3610qm and try and invest in a faster GPU 660m 670m 675m as these will boost the performance more than a better CPU.

Yeah, that's the best you'll get there. DON'T pay any more for the 2GB version. That GPU will run out of muscle in games long before it runs out of VRAM.
