Hi,

I have an 1 TB external HDD. Lets say i use a software to create an 100 GB encrypted volume where i can store confidential data. I understand it takes considerable time to create this encrypted volume.

Now after creating it, say i copy some data into it. How will fast will the data be copied?

Is it the case that every time i copy data into this volume, the data needs to be encrypted hence take more time? Or is it that because the volume is already encrypted, the data gets copied at normal speed?

Thanks in advance.

Too many variables. If you have hardware encryption support, usually it's no slower than a normal disk. An "encrypted volume" doesn't mean much other than all data sent to it must be encrypted before write, so the encryption/decryption overhead is ALWAYS there.

For example, most high end SSDs support encryption at a hardware level, and will write at near max speed. Most HDDs won't have that, so they will rely on your CPU's encryption support, which most modern chips have (IN-AES)
